Swimming laps in a pool or the ocean is a great form of exercise. Firstly, the water provides good resistance to give your muscles a full workout, however it also supports you so there's very little impact on your joints.
Swimming also increases your heart rate and therefore provides an excellent cardio-vascular workout. Plus the deep, focused breathing involved oxygenates your body and can even increase your lung capacity.
Last but not least, swimming laps can be quite meditative and being in the water for most people is soothing and relaxing. Anyone for a swim?
